Hardscaping: Employee Spotlight

What is hardscaping?  Hardscaping is incorporating man-made features in landscape architecture.  Paths, walls, etc.  We more often than not incorporate some sort of hardscaping in each of our design projects.  As you saw in the newsletter, we recently added an attractive feature to display our collection of bromeliads here at the nursery.

We were lucky enough to take advantage of Seascapes employee Justin's background in hardscaping during his time with us this year.  Justin enjoys the creativity of hardscaping.  He started at a young age hardscaping as his father owned a masonry and landscape supply yard.  His mother enjoyed working in the garden and it was fun for him to see how different plants can be incorporated with hardscape designs.

Although some projects can be very uniform, the projects he most enjoys allow him to branch out from the basic design and create something more unique. He often calls it "functional artwork". Justin loves the ocean and the natural flow and balance of the waves and tides.  His favorite projects are those that he can use natural stone to create flow- for example, a twisting and turning wave retaining wall.

Justin worked for Kauai Seascapes Nursery about 2.5 years ago.  He wanted to return this year because he really enjoyed his work experience here for several reasons: " The management cares about their employees and it shows in the general morality of the crew- creating a fun and productive work environment.  I also love learning about the numerous plants species.  I especially love the yard dogs, Cami and Koa."

A typical work day for Justin here at Seascapes most often involves working with the install crew.  They do landscape installs at different locations and every project is unique in its own way, making it more interesting and enjoyable. Justin has seen some changes in between the times he has been with us.  He says, "The jobs are larger-scale now, requiring heavier and more tactical equipment, and an even finer knowledge of landscape install and design on a broader level."

This article wouldn't be about Justin if he didn't also leave us a quote to ponder. "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." - John Muir

Justin departed Kauai at the end of May and we were sad to see him go, but you never know, he may be back again!  Justin's departing words, "Thank you Kauai Seascapes Nursery!  Keep Rockin'!".  Thank YOU Justin for all your hard work, talent, and vision.  A hui hou!
